What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage uses slow strokes and sustained, firm pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and fascia (the connective tissue that wraps your muscles). Instead of gliding over the surface like a relaxation massage, your therapist works into tight bands and knots (trigger points), often using forearms, elbows and thumbs, and works with your breathing so the muscle releases instead of fighting back.
Who deep tissue massage helps
- Neck and shoulder tension from laptops, phones and long drives
- Lower back tightness and stiff hips after flights, desk days or lifting
- Athletes and active people: runners, golfers, cyclists, lifters and fighters (see also sports massage)
- Stubborn knots that come back again and again (see trigger point therapy)
- Anyone who says “go harder” in a regular massage
Benefits of deep tissue massage
- Less muscle tension and pain in chronically tight areas
- Better range of motion: turning your head, reaching overhead and bending get easier
- Faster recovery after hard training
- Deep relaxation: research has found that massage lowers the stress hormone cortisol and raises serotonin and dopamine
Our Neck, Back & Hip Pain Relief Method
Our therapists are trained in the MMT Neck, Back & Hip Pain Relief Method, a hands-on approach created by our owners, licensed therapists Shane Molinaro and Alejandra Palau. It focuses deep work where most people carry their pain, and we teach you simple ways to keep the relief going after you leave the table.
Will it hurt?
Deep tissue massage should feel strong, sometimes “good sore,” but never sharp or unbearable. You are always in control of the pressure: say “lighter” or “deeper” at any time. Some soreness the next day is normal, like after a good workout. Drink water, take a warm shower, and move gently.
Where you can book it
- Our South Beach studio: 900 6th Street, Suite #32, a few blocks from Ocean Drive.
- On the beach: deep work with an ocean view (beach massage).
- In your hotel, condo or home: we come to you (mobile massage).
How long should a deep tissue massage be?
- 60 minutes: full body with extra focus on one problem area.
- 75 minutes: our favorite for deep work; time for the neck, back and hips.
- 90 minutes: the most complete session, slow enough for the deepest release.
Add-ons that pair well with deep tissue
- Hot stones warm the muscle so deep pressure sinks in faster.
- Cupping lifts and decompresses tight tissue, great for the back and shoulders.
- CBD oil for sore, overworked muscles.
Deep tissue vs. Swedish massage
Swedish massage uses long, flowing strokes for relaxation and circulation. Deep tissue is slower and firmer, aimed at tension and knots. Not sure? Book a full body massage and tell your therapist what you want; we blend both all the time. Love deep pressure without thumbs? Try Ashiatsu, our barefoot massage.

Deep tissue massage FAQ
Is deep tissue massage good for sciatica?
Many people with sciatic-type pain feel relief when tight muscles around the lower back, glutes and hips (like the piriformis) are released. Sciatica has different causes, so tell your therapist about your symptoms and check with your doctor if the pain is severe, new, or comes with numbness or weakness.
How often should I get a deep tissue massage?
For an ongoing problem, every 1 to 2 weeks at first works well, then monthly to maintain. For general tension, once a month is a great rhythm.
Is it normal to be sore after a deep tissue massage?
Yes, mild soreness for a day or two is normal. Drink water, take a warm shower or bath, and keep moving gently.
Can I get deep tissue massage while pregnant?
During pregnancy we recommend our prenatal massage, with positioning and pressure adapted for you and your baby.
Can I book a deep tissue massage today?
Often, yes. We need at least 1 hour and 15 minutes of notice. Book online or call or text (786) 399-0048.
