Recover Like a Fighter: Combat-Athlete Bodywork and Our Days at MMA Masters
Some of our favorite days have been spent in a gym full of fighters. Over the years we have trained, laughed, and worked on bodies at MMA Masters, one of Miami’s most respected mixed-martial-arts gyms — the kind of room where world-class grapplers and strikers sweat shoulder to shoulder and everyone leaves a little better than they walked in. This post is a love letter to that community and to a simple truth we see proven every week: the harder you train, the more your body needs skilled, intentional recovery.
A Room Full of Hard Work and Good People
Walk into a serious fight gym and the first thing you feel is the energy — red mats, heavy bags swinging, the rhythm of pad work, and a crew of people pushing each other toward their best. That is the world our friend BJJ champion Daniel Valverde comes from, and it is where we have been lucky enough to spend time on and off the mats. The athletes in these photos are part of that family: people who train like professionals and, just as importantly, recover like them. As fall fight camps ramp up heading into the holidays, that second half of the equation matters more than ever.

Why Hard Training Feels So Good
A tough round on the mats is a masterclass in hormetic stress — the short, sharp challenge that makes the body stronger. Rolling, sparring, and conditioning flood the system with adrenaline and norepinephrine, plus a brief, useful spike of cortisol that sharpens focus and mobilizes energy. Over time, demanding training like this supports cardiovascular fitness, strength, mood, and healthy brain chemistry, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which helps the brain learn and adapt new movement. And there is the part the science keeps confirming: doing it alongside people you trust is good for you. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has followed people for more than 80 years, keeps landing on the same finding — close relationships are among the strongest predictors of a long, healthy, happy life. A gym full of friends is good medicine.
Recover Like a Fighter: Tui Na, Deep Tissue, and Four-Hands
Where hard training winds the nervous system up, skilled bodywork brings it back down. A fighter’s body carries its history — the neck and shoulders that absorb strikes, the hips and low back that power every takedown, the forearms and hands that have gripped and struck thousands of times. For bodies like these we reach for firm, specific work: Tui Na, the hands-on Chinese medical massage of rolling, kneading, and pressing until stuck tissue lets go; deep tissue to release the deepest layers; and our four-hands sessions, where two therapists work in sync so a tired athlete gets twice the attention in half the time. Research by Dr. Tiffany Field and colleagues links massage therapy to lower cortisol and higher serotonin and dopamine, the body’s own calm-and-repair chemistry, and warm, trusted touch has been associated with the release of oxytocin, the hormone of trust and connection. It is exactly why grapplers, strikers, and weekend warriors across Miami Beach come to us after their hardest weeks. (Massage supports recovery and well-being; it is not a cure for injuries, and lasting pain deserves a medical evaluation.)
